-
- The IRIX 6.5 IRIX Interactive Desktop differs from the IRIX
- 6.4 Desktop in the following ways.
-
-
-
- +o In previous releases, the default behavior for IRIX
- systems was to allow display of remote applications. In
- IRIX 6.5, the default behavior is to not allow this
- display. This behavior can be turned on or off for the
- whole system by using the "Improve System Security"
- guide, for the individual by using the Desktop-
- >Customize->Desktop control panel, or for the session
- by using System->Utilities->Enable/Disable Remote
- Display. Use of Desktop->Access Files->By Remote Login
- will enable remote display for the current session from
- the machine accessed.
-
- +o In IRIX 6.5, end users can design their own desktop
- icons without needing root permission. For
- instructions, see the detailed comments in the
- /_u_s_r/_l_i_b/_f_i_l_e_t_y_p_e/_M_a_k_e_f_i_l_e._p_e_r_s_o_n_a_l file.
-
-
- +o "Type to select" functionality now has audio feedback.
- When the user types with the mouse pointer over an fm
- window or over the desktop background, sounds will play
- to indicate which icons match and are being selected.
- A soft click means that several icons match and are
- selected. A bell ding means that only one icon matches
- and is selected. A quick suction sound means that no
- icon matches and no icon is selected. The suction
- sound also plays when the user presses the spacebar to
- clear the selection.
-
-
- +o The desktop Removable Media Manager now shows all
- volumes on mounted devices such as CDROM and zip
- drives, instead of just one of the volumes.
-
- +o The Desktop is no longer limited to displaying 10
- removable media devices.
-
-
- +o The mmmmaaaakkkkeeeeDDDDoooottttDDDDeeeesssskkkkttttoooopppp program now has a Cancel button
- which users can click to exit back to the login screen.
- It also has an Always toggle which users can check to
- designate a choice to be made automatically whenever
- they log into a system where their home directory is
-

- NFS-mounted. From Desktop > Customize > Environment
- Setup, users can now run mmmmaaaakkkkeeeeDDDDoooottttDDDDeeeesssskkkkttttoooopppp during their
- login sessions to change their preferences.
-
-
-
- +o In previous releases, the File Manager wouldn't support
- the "Empty Dumpster" command correctly when running on
- top of the Andrew File System. This problem has been
- fixed for the IRIX 6.5 release.
-
-
- +o There is a new Permissions panel for viewing and
- changing file access permissions and ownership,
- accessible from Selected > Change Permissions.
-
-
- +o The NEdit text editor has replaced Jot as the default
- in the Desktop > Customize > Utilities panel. Also the
- MHmail entry has been removed from this panel because
- MHmail must be run at a command line.
-
-
- +o The toolchest has a few new entries, including System >
- Display Properties, System > Process Manager, Help >
- Quick Answers (formerly How Do I...) and Help > Hints
- & Shortcuts.
-
-
- +o If the user's home directory is not writable, then the
- user will be able to log in but the desktop will not
- run. The file manager and other programs in the
- desktop require read and write access to the special
- $_H_O_M_E/._d_e_s_k_t_o_p-<_h_o_s_t_n_a_m_e> directory.
-
-
- +o A new GL screensaver called Diatoms has been added to
- the Desktop > Customize > Screensaver panel. To see
- it, install the IRIX 6.5 _d_e_s_k_t_o_p__t_o_o_l_s product.
-
-
- +o The desktop filetypes will recognize DOS executables as
- ForeignExecutables when SoftWindows is not installed.
- They will also recognize C++ source files whose
- filenames end in ".C" or ".C++" as well as ".c++".
-
-
- +o The desktop now recognizes any DAT drive, not just
- Archive Python DAT drives.
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-

-
-
-
- +o The $_H_O_M_E/._d_e_s_k_t_o_p-<_h_o_s_t_n_a_m_e>/._u_s_e_r_e_n_v file is
- obsolete. The /_v_a_r/_X_1_1/_x_d_m/_X_s_e_s_s_i_o_n._d_t script used to
- save environment variables in this file.
-
-
- +o When the O2 camera is plugged into an O2, two icons
- will appear on the desktop background: a camera and a
- microphone. Double-clicking the camera icon will
- launch mediarecorder in video-snap mode using the O2
- camera as video input. Opening the microphone icon
- will launch mediarecorder in audio-record mode using
- the O2 camera microphone as audio input.
-
-
- +o For fast presentation of fm windows, the file manager
- now caches desktop filetypes in the $_H_O_M_E/._d_e_s_k_t_o_p-
- <_h_o_s_t_n_a_m_e>/_T_y_p_e_C_a_c_h_e directory.
-
-
- +o Desktop sounds have changed. The search tool's sound
- effects have been restored. Also, the high-pitched
- plink sound that accompanies the arrival of a new file
- on the desktop now also plays when the user renames any
- icon or moves an icon from one directory to another.
-
-
- +o When the user holds the Alt key and double-clicks a
- remote device icon such as a zip or a jaz drive, the
- _a_c_c_e_s_s_w_o_r_k_s_t_a_t_i_o_n(_1) application will now run, allowing
- the user to open an fm window of the remote media.
-
-
- +o The Desktop > Customize > Color Schemes panel lets the
- user edit three new colors. These are the colors of
- links used in the IRIX Interactive Desktop System
- Administration active guides.
-
-
- +o The Desktop > Customize > Iconviews panel no longer has
- the Permissions Details toggle, as all fm windows now
- show permissions details. The settings that affect all
- iconviews have been grouped in a separate Global
- Settings section. The panel has a few new toggles:
- Pathfinder, Preserve Layout When Opening in Place, and
- Truncated Names.
-
-
- +o In fm windows, users can call up the Search/Filter
- Files pane with a new Ctrl-S accelerator.
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-

-
-
-
- +o In Desktop > Customize > Screensaver, the maximum
- slider values have been increased to 120 minutes for
- the screensaver delay and 180 minutes for the
- powersaver delay.
-
-
- +o If the user has a $_H_O_M_E/._x_s_e_s_s_i_o_n file or a
- $_H_O_M_E/._s_g_i_s_e_s_s_i_o_n file, then at login the desktop will
- no longer issue a warning before executing that file.
-
-
- +o If users set the environment variable
- SGI_DESKTOP_DIRECTORY in their $_H_O_M_E/._c_s_h_r_c or
- $_H_O_M_E/._p_r_o_f_i_l_e file, then the next time they log in,
- the desktop will use the value of that variable as the
- directory in which to store desktop background icons.
- This lets users avoid having to have a directory named
- _D_e_s_k_t_o_p in their home directory.
-
-
- +o The Desktop > Customize > Sounds panel now lets users
- redirect their desktop sounds to a different audio
- output device.
-
-
- +o The monitor confidence test has changed significantly.
- In IRIX 6.5, it uses more standard patterns and
- provides video control options to control the emission
- of R,G,B video streams for testing the display.
-
-
- +o The content viewer in _f_m(_1) windows now plays AVI movie
- files and MPEG1 video files. The content viewer also
- now shows a long listing of a directory's contents when
- the user clicks on the background of the fm window.
-
-
- +o The Desktop Message Bus (DMB) is obsolete in IRIX 6.5
- and later releases. Applications that used to use the
- DMB now instead use ViewKit's run-once functionality or
- new desktop ConfigWatcher functionality. Some
- customization panels now require write access to the
- $_H_O_M_E/._d_e_s_k_t_o_p-<_h_o_s_t_n_a_m_e>/_F_m_S_t_a_t_e file in order to
- communicate changes to the file manager.
-
-
- +o The new ffffmmmmsssseeeerrrrvvvv daemon allows multiple file manager (ffffmmmm)
- windows to share the same process, which trims memory
- usage. It also monitors the
- /_u_s_r/_l_i_b/_f_i_l_e_t_y_p_e/_d_e_s_k_t_o_p._o_t_r icons database and gives
- the user the option of restarting the desktop when a
